“Sometimes those stories can get emotional,” Sikkema said.

Born in Massachusetts in 1968, the adoption records were open. She spent about six months in foster care but doesn’t know anything about that time. She was then adopted. She calls her adoptive mother and father “my parents.”

Eventually, the state sealed Sikkema’s adoption records. After petitioning the court she was successful in finding the name of her birth mother.

“She wasn’t interested in meeting and so I’ve respected her wishes,” she said.

Sikkema said her experience was “a rollercoaster of emotion.” She found the information more than two decades ago and has had no more contact…
