Foster Grandparent of the Year Honored. Black honored for work with children
Since 2011, Shirley Black has touched the lives of young children as a Foster Grandparent in the Head Start and Early Head Start program at Douglass Community Services.
To help children find a place of belonging, Grandma Shirley begins by helping each child build a relationship. Each morning, she assists arriving children transition into the classroom. Children needing extra attention find it in Grandma Shirley’s lap. She asks about their day and how they are feeling. She models for the children how to take care of their own wellness by making sure that they can use wipes and tissues to keep hands and faces clean…
