Heartbreak to Success. Single Mother Defies the odds to adopt a son from foster care

Suddenly Suzanne found herself alone with two kids under five – with no way to provide any income for them.

In the end, she decided to head back to university to retrain as a teacher.

It was during this time that Suzanne met a friend who worked for the Department of Child Safety.

“She told me how children would go days at the placement centre because there was such a shortage of families able and willing to take them in,” Suzanne recalled.

“I had considered becoming a foster parent many times while married, but my husband at the time would tell me, ‘It would be too hard to bond with a child and then have to send them home to a scary situation.’
